Sanok Kalikih a.k.a Kolak Pepaya

No, this is not a cooked Papaya in coconut milk sauce..

Couple months ago I stumbled on Pennylane's Blog post about Pepaya Kalimantan. As a lady who live in Balikpapan I was curious why I've never met that kind of fruit. What is available most of the time is a seedless sweet watermelon and some of seasonal fruits such as rambutan, durian, mango and so on.

Last week me and hubby were going around the city hoped that we could find another place to explore. So we went to Pandan Sari market that day, it was the first time for us and we were so surprised knowing how cheap the stuff that being sold there, I bought a bag of baby corn that costs only 1k rupiah @_@ not only that, I also bring a big bag of bean sprout, bunch of bananas, half of a juicy burning red watermelon and the most importanly the Pepaya Kalimantan! 5k rupiah for 3 pcs.

I waited until noon to get the papaya babies got chilled then when the time comes, oh ..my.. gawdh.. it was perfect. The taste is like a mix of carica (mountain papaya from dieng) and a ripe papaya without any bad regular papaya smell, the sweetness is in a higher level but not too sweet as it can sore your throat all day. It comes in a really small size, just a bit bigger than a navel orange. I doubt it at first, but hey.. even it small, it already colored like a ripe papaya.. marigold color.

Okay enough bragging.

Finding a good quality of papaya is like a ritual in my family. My great-grandmother have a papaya tree in front of her house in Solok, she have an antique pocket knife that she use only for special ocassion, and one of that ocassion is to peel the chosen papaya :)))

We used to make a family signatured desert anytime we have a good quality of papaya especially during ramadhan season. It is by dressing the fresh chilled papaya with coconut milk sauce, as you might already know west-sumatranesse always make use of coconut milk.

So easy, just simmered a light coconut milk with pandan leave until cooked, add sugar and salt to taste. then drizzle over your papaya chunk. enjoy!
